RHINOPLASTY AND ALARPLASTY

A Well-Proportioned Nose for a Beautiful Face |
| |
 |
The nose is the most prominent feature of the human face to which people direct their attention.
It is quite amazing how rhinoplasty, popularly known as "the nose job", can balance and enhance the beauty of a face.
With the advent of modern rhinoplasty techniques, it is now possible to achieve aesthetically superior outcomes. |
|
| Rhinoplasty |
Rhinoplasty is the most common cosmetic procedure at Yanhee. It demands a high degree of surgical skill to perform and our plastic surgeons have achieved a high degree of learning due to their vast exposure.
|
| Materials used for Rhinoplasty |
|
1. Soft silicone
2. Natural body tissue, such as bone and cartilage (rarely used at present) |
| AlarPlasty |
Alarplasty is the reduction of the width of the nostrils to match proportionally with the overall contour of the nose and be in perfect symmetry - a perfect nose speaks in volumes for the face.
|
| The Surgical Procedure |
A sedative pill is given to reduce anxiety and to reduce stress. The aim of the procedure is to insert an individually fashioned silicone on the bridge of the nose through an incision approximately 1 cm on the sides of the nostrils. Variations on this approach depend on the surgeon’s skill and technique. A “pocket” is made at the ridge of the nose cartilage into which is inserted the prepared silicone.
After checking that the implant is properly positioned, the wound is sutured usually with 3 stitches. An external splint may be placed over the nose at the discretion of the surgeon in order to prevent or reduce swelling.

With alarplasty, the surgeon makes incisions to remove nasal skin and tissue and fashions the base of the nose to make it proportional with the width of the nostril. The procedure is done in 30-45 minutes. The patient is made to recover from the sedative for approximately an hour and a cold compress is applied over the operative site.
The patient is sent home and returns for a follow up check and removal of the sutures 5 to 7 days after the surgery

The Post-Operative Care
|
| Rhinoplasty |
1. Apply cold compress over the operative site for 2-3 days. Sleep on a high back rest at
30 degrees and do not sleep flat on your face.
2. Do not worry about slight bleeding; use a clean cotton bud soaked in saline solution or antibiotic ointment to clean. Bleeding will usually stop one day after the surgery.
3. Refrain from nose picking or blowing the nose forcefully. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages, fermented foods and spicy foods at least one month from the surgery.
4. Refrain from strenuous activities for 14 days after the surgery, as this may increase the swelling.
5. A plaster cast or splint may be place over nose which will be removed three days after the surgery.
6. You can use both your forefingers to straighten the nose during the first month. A little pain may be elicited.
7. Swelling will subside and complete healing is expected in as early as 3 months.
8. During the first two weeks after the surgery, you should be careful not to touch or move the area around the nose and should avoid sleeping on one side of your body for a month.
9. There maybe bruises on some patients, this will gradually diminish and be gone within two weeks.
10. Soluble sutures are used to close the incision and are expected to dissolve in about 1-2 months. |
| Alarplasty |
1. Use cotton buds soaked in saline solution to remove the scabs and blood, and then apply antibiotic ointment 2-3 times a day.
2. As much as possible avoid smiling, laughing or heavy chewing for about a month, as the wound may open resulting to scarring. Use both hands to hold your cheeks when talking, smiling or laughing.
3. Scars will disappear in approximately 3-6 months. |
