Hoarseness is a symptom due to the abnormal voice changes or vocal cords which can cause swelling of voice cords or loss of voice. The hoarseness occurs by many causes; such as using your voice too much, too loudly or improperly extended period of time, yelling, or being the chronic rhinitis.

Normally, if patients have voice hoarse in short time, the treatment are to rest of using voice, to drink plenty of water or to treat depending on the cause. In the contrary, if being the hoarseness more than 2 weeks, the patients will be the chronic hoarse and have to see doctors for diagnosing; especially, in the case of patients who are risk for being cancer from drinking alcohol or smoking too much.

Instruction for preventing hoarseness
- Avoid yelling or screaming
- Not to use strange voice by tighten the vocal cords
- Avoid speaking in noisy place
- Speak by using your natural tone; not too high and not too low
- Speak by proper tone to rest your vocal cords
- Stop smoking
- Avoid being in dusty and smoking place

In the case of surgery, it provides for patients who have polyps of the vocal cords. Patients will be taken the anesthetic, then, doctor will use lighted flexible tube (fiberoptic scope) passing through your mouth in order to view your vocal cords. From this treatment, patients do not get trauma but only will be admitted in hospital for 2 days.
