Surgical removal or laser can treat diseased, enlarged and tortuous veins that no longer work properly and cause symptoms like pain, itchiness or swelling. Another method of vein therapy is injection of a sclerosing agent on areas of telangiectasia (spider veins).
Sclerotherapy
A sclerosing medicine is injected directly in areas of spider veins to obliterate them. There may be bruises on the areas of injection, but these are expected to heal in about 1 month.
Endovenous Laser Ablation
Varicose veins of any size can be ablated using a laser-powered probe. A thin probe is threaded in the vein and applied to emit laser energy and deteriorate the vein integrity until it is obliterated.
Vein Stripping Surgery
Surgery has long been employed to relieve a patient of symptoms such as pain and swelling that come as a result of having large, incompetent varicose veins. The diseased part of the vein is reached through an incision in the upper thigh and another in the lower end using a special instrument. It is then excised and removed and the incisions are stitched.
