Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Will I be asleep during surgery?

Answer: You will be asleep under general anesthesia while the surgical team works for 1-2 hours.

Q2: Will I be in pain, and if so, for how long?

Answer: Your nose and its surrounding area may be stuffy, sore and swollen after surgery. Pain medication will be provided to keep you comfortable. You can expect the soreness and swelling to abate gradually so that by 2 or 3 weeks, your face will look and feel near normal already.

Q3: How long should I stay in the hospital?

Answer: After surgery, you will be closely monitored in the hospital for 1-2 days. After this time, you may be discharged. Follow up check is usually within 7-10 days of surgery.

Q4: How should I take care of myself?

Answer: Avoid touching or blowing your nose for a few days after surgery. Take care to keep the nose splint in place for 4-7 days. You may go back to work in 1 to 2 weeks. Wait about 1 to 2 months before lifting objects and exercising. You will notice that the period of time is not stated definitely. This is because each patient is unique as to their recovery rate, the nature of their jobs, and other factors.

Q5: What could go wrong?

Answer: Some risks of surgery include bleeding, adverse response to anesthesia, infection, delayed healing, asymmetry, nerve injury, tear duct injury, and need for revision surgery.

Q6: How do I prepare for surgery?

Answer: To avoid complications and reduce risk factors, you must be free from upper respiratory problems. Two weeks before your schedule, you need to stop smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, taking hormonal pills, herbal supplements, and medicines other than those that your doctor allows you to continue. People with diseases need surgical clearance from their medical specialist.
