What is Carboxytherapy all about?
Carboxytherapy is a treatment procedure which uses carbon dioxide gas, an odorless gas that is part of the air we breathe, by injecting it just under the surface of the skin (cutaneous and subcutaneous layers), using a fine needle.
How does Carboxytherapy work?
The carbon dioxide injected into the skin diffuses into the surrounding tissues, causing blood vessels to dilate. Wider vessels mean a stronger blood supply, which brings a rush of oxygen and nutrients to the treated area, improving its circulation.
Carbon dioxide kills fat cells, even rupture, and the extra oxygen eliminates the fluid build-up between cells, stimulating the skin to produce more collagen, resulting in fewer fat cells and firmer, younger-looking skin.
What are the indications for treatment with Carboxytherapy?
- Stretch marks
- Fat sculpting or reduction in arms, abdomen, buttocks, and legs
How does Carboxytherapy work to eliminate stretch marks?
When injected through a specific technology, carbon dioxide gas is directly toxic to fat cells which literally burst and are eliminated by the body.
Several types of machines are available for the use of administering the carbon dioxide, but they all have the same basic components, such as a tank of carbon dioxide connected by plastic tubing to a flow-regulator which slows down the spread of the gas, according to the rate selected by the physician.
The gas comes out of the flow regulator into the sterile tubing with a filter connected at the exit, to remove any trace impurities before the gas is run through a tiny needle attached to the opposite side of the filter. The pure gas is then ready to be injected beneath the skin through a tiny needle.
What is the recommended number of treatments in order to achieve optimum effects?
An average of 6-12 treatments, at one-week intervals.
Recently formed stretch marks may need to be treated once a week for 5-6 treatments. Old stretch marks may need to be treated once a month for 5-6 treatments.
What are the common side effects of this procedure?
There may only be potential and temporary bruising on the treated area which will heal by itself after a few days.
There are no known long-term side effects so far.
Are there any risks related to this procedure?
There are some medical restrictions for patients who have underlying respiratory problems, particularly Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, asthma, or cardiac problems.
That is the reason why the physician will always check for the presence of any underlying medical problems in the patient before deciding to prescribe this form of treatment.
Instruction for the patient after going through Carboxytherapy:
The patient should avoid engaging in strenuous exercises at least 2 hours after the treatment.
